Overview

This original Soviet period mantle figurine showcases a youthful Alexander Pushkin in a thoughtful, relaxed state. Based on the mid-century model modeled by sculptor A. I. Selezneva-Shcherbakova, this piece was manufactured at an official artistic foundry in the Soviet Union using lightweight silumin metal alloy. The item features the classic semi-matte black finish used to imitate heavy cast iron. Please note that there is a prominent broken hole section on the lower side edge under the pillow. Despite this structural flaw, the portraiture work on the young poet's face and curly hair remains completely intact and displays nicely from the primary viewing angles.

Interesting Facts

  • Sculptor Anna Ivanovna Selezneva-Shcherbakova specialized in creating portraits of historical figures, capturing Pushkin during his boyhood years at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum.
  • Silumin alloy became popular for Soviet desk sculptures starting in the late 1950s because it was much lighter to ship across the USSR than traditional cast iron or solid bronze.
  • The black coating on these statues is a specific type of spirit lacquer called "Gollandskaya Sazha" (Dutch soot paint), designed to preserve the metal from indoor oxidation over decades.

Publishers

  • Manufacturer: Soviet Art Fund Enterprise (Kasli / Kusa metallurgical artistic workshops), Russian SFSR.
