Overview
Human plans crumble quickly when faced with calculated temptation. In László Cserépy's tense 1943 melodrama Aranypáva—presented here as volume 16 of the Magyar Klasszikusok collection—an aging miller tries to secure his family's future by leaving his mill and his daughter's fate to his trusted, hardworking foreman, Mátyás.
The carefully designed future shatters when Mátyás falls under the spell of Piros Katinka, the predatory and alluring owner of the notorious "Aranypáva" tavern. Sulyok Mária delivers a fierce performance as the manipulative temptress determined to use every trick of seduction to claim both the man and his newfound wealth. Anchored by the legendary Antal Páger, the film transforms a rural inheritance story into a claustrophobic psychological struggle against vice and moral collapse.
Based on a screenplay by the celebrated author István Fekete, this rare archival release from Jupiter Film Kft. preserves an important artifact of mid-century Hungarian cinema. It is a striking addition to any collection dedicated to classic European drama and old-school cinematic storytelling.
