Overview
Both Shostakovich violin concertos on a single disc, played by Alina Ibragimova with Vladimir Jurowski conducting the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia. Seventy-one minutes of some of the most emotionally concentrated concerto writing of the 20th century.
The First Concerto (Op. 77) was composed in 1947-48 but withheld until 1956 — Shostakovich kept it in a drawer during the worst years of Stalinist repression, knowing it would not pass. The four movements carry coded weight: the long opening Nocturne, a sardonic Scherzo, a massive Passacaglia with cadenza, and a fiery Burlesque finale. Ibragimova navigates all of it with control and intelligence, never over-emoting where the music already speaks.
The Second Concerto (Op. 129, 1967) is leaner and stranger — three movements of concentrated introspection, written for David Oistrakh's 60th birthday. Less performed, less recorded, and in some ways more interesting for it. Ibragimova's account is one of the best available.
Jurowski and the Svetlanov Orchestra bring idiomatic authority to both scores. This is their repertoire from the inside, and it shows.
Interesting Facts
- Violin Concerto No. 1 was premiered by David Oistrakh in Leningrad on October 29, 1956, eight years after its completion; Oistrakh had kept the score in secret during the delay.
- The Passacaglia in the First Concerto is built on a 12-note theme — a deliberate nod to the serial techniques Shostakovich otherwise kept at arm's length.
- Alina Ibragimova was born in Russia in 1985 and studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal College of Music in London; she has been a Hyperion artist since the early stages of her career.
- Vladimir Jurowski has been General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera since 2021; he is the grandson of conductor Vladimir Michailovich Jurowski and son of conductor Michail Jurowski.
- The State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia bears the name of Evgeny Svetlanov, its most celebrated principal conductor, who led the ensemble from 1965 to 2000.
- Hyperion Records, founded in London in 1980, is one of the UK's most respected independent classical labels, known for its complete song and concerto series and consistently high recording standards.
