Overview

A signed copy of one of the only times this many living blues legends shared one stage with one backing band — and the night was filmed properly.

June 1982. The Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey. John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, for this run, was about as serious as the name has ever sounded — Mick Taylor (just out of the Rolling Stones) on lead guitar, John McVie (Fleetwood Mac) on bass, Colin Allen (Rod Stewart's drummer) behind the kit. Mayall opened with his own set, then brought out five Chicago and Memphis royals one by one, with the Bluesbreakers acting as house band for each: Albert King, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, and Sippie Wallace, who was eighty-three years old that night and had been recording blues since the 1920s.

The whole thing ends with everyone back on stage for a C.C. Rider jam — Albert King, Buddy Guy and Mick Taylor trading lead-guitar choruses while the rhythm section tries to keep up. Director Len Dell'Amico shot it for proper concert release. Hybrid Recordings put it on DVD in 2004. The John Mayall signature on the front turns the disc into a piece of physical blues history.

Interesting Facts

This 1982 Capitol Theater concert is the source of the long-circulating Stormy Monday with Albert King performance — the same track that appears on several Mayall career-retrospective compilations.

The line-up of guests reads like a who's-who of postwar American blues. Albert King was the left-handed Memphis giant whose Born Under a Bad Sign (Stax, 1967) influenced everyone from Cream to SRV. Etta James, by 1982, was deep into the second act of her career after her early Chess Records years. Buddy Guy and Junior Wells were the most-recorded Chicago harp-and-guitar duo of the 60s and 70s. Sippie Wallace, born in 1898, had recorded with Louis Armstrong as a sideman in the 1920s and was rediscovered in the 60s with help from Bonnie Raitt — her appearance here, at age 83, is one of her last filmed performances before her death in 1986.

Behind the stars, the Bluesbreakers lineup itself is historic: Mick Taylor had been the Stones' lead guitarist from 1969 to 1974 and was an original Bluesbreakers alumnus from 1967; John McVie had played with Mayall before co-founding Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood. The fact that all four of them were on one stage with Mayall in 1982 was already a small miracle of scheduling.
