Overview

Tangerine Moon is György Vukán's collection of original works for wind ensemble, recorded by the Bolero Wind Ensemble of Győr under his own direction and released on Hungaroton Classic in 2007. Five works across 17 tracks — the title suite, three bagatelles, three dances, the atmospheric Wine Dark Sea (with Gábor Boldoczki on trumpet), and the extended For Ever and a Day — make up a programme that moves comfortably between contemporary classical language and jazz-inflected character.

Vukán is one of Hungary's most versatile musicians: a composer, jazz pianist, and arranger whose output spans orchestral music, film scores, chamber works, and jazz recordings. His writing for wind ensemble reflects that breadth — there is wit in the bagatelles, a darker, more searching quality in Wine Dark Sea, and a sustained inventiveness across the closing For Ever and a Day that runs nearly 20 minutes. The Bolero Wind Ensemble plays with precision and evident familiarity with the material, and Gábor Boldoczki's trumpet contribution to track 12 brings particular colour to that movement.

For collectors of contemporary Hungarian music and wind ensemble repertoire, this is an attractively packaged and well-recorded disc of accessible, individual music from a composer whose profile deserves wider recognition outside Hungary.

Interesting Facts

  • György Vukán (born 1941, Budapest) is one of Hungary's most prolific composer-performers, known equally in jazz and classical circles; he has composed over 200 works spanning symphonic music, chamber music, film scores, and jazz compositions.
  • Gábor Boldoczki, who appears on Wine Dark Sea (track 12) courtesy of Sony-BMG Music Entertainment, is one of the most internationally active Hungarian trumpet soloists of his generation.
  • The Bolero Wind Ensemble is a Győr-based Hungarian chamber ensemble specialising in contemporary wind music; the city of Győr (northwest Hungary) has a strong tradition of ensemble music fostered by the Győr Philharmonic.
  • Vukán's dual career in jazz and classical composition is relatively rare in the Hungarian musical landscape; his jazz recordings — particularly his duo and trio work — have been released on both Hungarian and international labels.
  • The title Tangerine Moon reflects Vukán's characteristic blend of lyrical imagery and musical playfulness — an approach that keeps his chamber music accessible without sacrificing compositional craft.
  • Hungaroton Classic, founded in 1951 as the state label of Hungary, remains the most comprehensive archive of Hungarian musical recordings and continues to release new recordings of Hungarian composers alongside its historical catalogue.
