Overview

"Hősregék" (Hero Legends) is a treasured collection of Hungarian historical tales and legends from the era of the Huns and the Árpád dynasty, originally published in 1905 by Vass József Publishing House in Budapest. Written by "Imre bácsi" (Uncle Imre), this beloved book presents heroic stories from the early history of the Hungarian people, crafted specifically for children. This reprint edition, published by Magister '93, preserves the original text and illustrations while making this important cultural heritage accessible to new generations. The stories emphasize virtues like courage, goodness, loyalty, and perseverance—values that remain timeless and relevant for young readers today.

Interesting Facts

This cherished volume represents an important cultural artifact from the early 20th century that connects Hungarian children with their national mythology and heritage. The original publication date of 1905 places it during a period of heightened national consciousness in Hungary, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This era saw increased interest in celebrating Hungarian identity through literature, art, and the revival of historical stories.

The author, who chose to be known simply as "Imre bácsi" (Uncle Imre), preserved his anonymity even in the reprint—suggesting that the stories themselves were considered more important than the author's identity. This approach reflects the traditional nature of folk storytelling, where the tales belong to the community rather than to an individual creator.

According to the introduction in the reprint edition, this book provided "unforgettable reading experiences" for three generations of one family before being republished. This speaks to the enduring appeal of these stories across different eras, from the early 20th century through the communist period and into the post-Soviet era.

The stories focus on the earliest periods of Hungarian history, including the era of Attila the Hun (whom many Hungarians historically claimed as an ancestor) and the Árpád dynasty, which ruled Hungary from approximately 895 to 1301 CE. These narratives helped shape national identity by connecting young readers with heroic figures from their perceived ancestral past, emphasizing values that were considered essential to Hungarian character.

The original publication proudly notes that it was printed in "Kisasszony hava" (the Month of the Virgin, referring to August) in the year 1904, described as "the 1008th year after the Hungarian conquest"—demonstrating how the medieval arrival of the Magyar tribes in the Carpathian Basin was used as a foundational moment for national identity, comparable to the way other nations count years from their founding.
