Overview

Ferenczi György is one of Hungary's great harmonica players — a former world champion on the instrument — and with the Rackajam he makes music that refuses to sit in one genre. Hungarian folk meets rhythm and blues, funk, reggae and groove, all of it played live and loose.

Rackák Menni Amerika takes that sound to Nashville. The band recorded with American engineer-producer Derek Garten and, by their own account, gave him a single instruction: free hand. They wanted to hear what their unbound music would say to American ears. Everything here is the way a Nashville producer would shape it — and they kept it exactly as it came.

The performances were cut live, all at once, the way the rock and roll pioneers did it in the fifties. The band stands behind the result, rough edges and all. Across eighteen tracks the record runs from raw blues stomps to folk-rooted melody, with Ferenczi's harmonica threading through it all.

This is the 2014 summer programme of one of Hungary's most distinctive live acts, captured the way it sounds in the room — about an hour of music with the dust left on.

Interesting Facts

  • Ferenczi György is a former harmonica world champion and has worked as a session and guest musician with major Hungarian acts including LGT, Edda, Zorán and Presser.
  • The Rackajam lineup has worked with Ferenczi since 2005, playing a fusion that pulls Hungarian folk together with R&B, funk, reggae, hip-hop and groove.
  • The album was recorded with Nashville engineer-producer Derek Garten, with the band giving him complete creative freedom over the sound and mix.
  • The tracks were recorded live and all at once, deliberately echoing the way fifties rock and roll records were made.
  • The release came through Gryllus, with thanks on the sleeve to Dániel Gryllus of the folk group Kaláka.
  • Earlier Ferenczi és a Rackajam albums, including the 2006 Petőfi project and 2010's Rackák világa, were both certified gold in Hungary.
