Interesting Facts

Historic Musical Partnerships

This collection documents some of the most celebrated musical partnerships of the 20th century. The Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio, formed in 1961 by pianist Eugene Istomin, violinist Isaac Stern, and cellist Leonard Rose, was one of the most acclaimed piano trios in history. Similarly, the collaboration between David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich brought together two Soviet musical titans whose interpretations of works like the Brahms Double Concerto set standards that remain unsurpassed.

The Legendary Amadeus Quartet

The Amadeus Quartet, featured in this collection performing Mozart and Beethoven, was among the most revered string quartets of all time. Founded in London in 1947, the ensemble maintained the same four members (Norbert Brainin, Siegmund Nissel, Peter Schidlof, and Martin Lovett) for its entire 40-year existence—an extraordinary feat in chamber music. Their interpretations, especially of the Viennese classical repertoire, are still considered definitive benchmarks.

Cold War Musical Diplomacy

Many of these performances occurred during the height of the Cold War when classical music served as an important cultural bridge between East and West. Soviet artists like Rostropovich, Richter, and Oistrakh were among the few Soviet citizens allowed to perform in the West, with their concerts becoming significant diplomatic as well as artistic events. These performances thus represent not just musical excellence but also powerful moments of cultural exchange during a period of intense geopolitical tension.
