Originally premiered in Paris in 1716 and presented here in its revised 1717 version, this tragédie en musique explores the dark mythological tale of the Danaïdes. Under the expert direction of early music pioneer György Vashegyi, the Budapest-based Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra join forces with an elite cast of French Baroque vocal specialists, including Katherine Watson and Mathias Vidal. This co-production with the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles shines a vibrant modern light on the intricate instrumentation, powerful choruses, and deeply emotional recitatives characteristic of the Regency period in France.
