Overview

The Telemann Collection is a ten-disc tour through the work of the most prolific composer of the Baroque era — and one of its most inventive. Brilliant Classics has assembled a genuinely broad survey here, from the famous Tafelmusik (Musique de table) to the sacred oratorios, played by specialist period and chamber ensembles.

The spread is the appeal. You get the orchestral suites and overtures, double concertos and oboe concertos, the Paris Quartets, the Scherzi melodichi, and a full Passion oratorio across the final two discs. Performers include Musica Amphion under Pieter-Jan Belder, Collegium Instrumentale Brugense under Patrick Peire, and the Freiburger Vokalensemble.

For anyone building a Baroque library, this is a lot of Telemann done well, at box-set value.

Interesting Facts

  • He was a close friend of J.S. Bach (godfather to C.P.E. Bach) and a contemporary of Handel.
  • The Musique de table (Tafelmusik) was among his most internationally celebrated publications in his own lifetime.
  • The recordings gathered here span more than 25 years (1989–2015) and feature leading period-instrument ensembles.
