Overview
Driving Miss Daisy won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and it did it with almost no plot machinery — just two people in a car over twenty-five years. Jessica Tandy plays Daisy Werthan, a wealthy, stubborn Atlanta widow who crashes her car and is no longer trusted to drive. Her son Boolie (Dan Aykroyd) hires Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman) to chauffeur her, against her loud objections.
What follows is the slow thaw. Daisy and Hoke come from opposite ends of the social order and want nothing to do with each other at first, but the daily routine of being driven around the American South across the civil-rights years builds something neither expected — a friendship grounded in mutual trust and respect.
This is the Hungarian Extra Edition from Gamma Home Entertainment, with both Hungarian and English 5.1 audio and subtitles in both languages. It carries a full bonus package, including a director's commentary, the original making-of featurette, and a profile of Jessica Tandy. The film runs about 95 minutes on a dual-layer DVD-9.
Interesting Facts
- The film won four Oscars from nine nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress (Jessica Tandy), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Makeup.
- Jessica Tandy, at 80, became the oldest person ever to win the Academy Award for Best Actress.
- Alfred Uhry adapted the screenplay from his own Pulitzer Prize–winning 1987 stage play, drawn from his own family memories of an Atlanta upbringing.
- The score was composed by Hans Zimmer relatively early in his career, using synthesized textures rather than a full orchestra.
- Driving Miss Daisy remains the last PG-rated film to win Best Picture.
- Director Bruce Beresford was famously not nominated for Best Director despite the film winning Best Picture — a rare Oscar anomaly.
