Overview
Bandázom is Hungarian folk singer Herczku Ágnes's 2014 solo album — the title roughly means "I'm playing with the band," and that camaraderie is the whole point. After years of touring together, she and a group of musicians had forged a real ensemble, and this record captures it.
The music draws on the rich folk song traditions of Transylvania, threaded with Romanian, Bulgarian and Oriental elements and some folk-inspired originals. Herczku's voice is the anchor — clear, expressive, equally at home in a mournful lament and a headlong dance tune.
The architect behind it is Nikola Parov, her long-time creative partner since 1999, who composed, arranged, produced and played a small arsenal of instruments (bouzouki, kaval, duduk, kanun and more). Alongside drummer-percussionist Sándor Födő and four younger folk players, the arrangements come out airy and light, placing old melodies in a fresh, mainstream-friendly setting. Guests Mihály Dresch (fuhun) and János Ávéd (tenor sax) add color.
This is the sealed Fonó edition — a handsome digipak with booklet, the way the album was issued.
