Overview

John Fogerty spent most of the 1970s and 1980s unable to perform his own songs — tied up in one of the most tangled legal disputes in rock history, he had lost the rights to the Creedence Clearwater Revival catalogue and famously refused to play those songs live for decades. The Long Road Home In Concert, filmed at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, documents the moment he reclaimed them: a full two-hour set in which Fogerty played the CCR songbook — "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Fortunate Son," "Born on the Bayou," "Run Through the Jungle" — alongside his own solo catalogue, front to back, for the first time in a generation.

The result is not a nostalgia lap. Fogerty plays with the focused intensity of someone settling an old score, and the band is tight throughout. The set list of 26 songs is essentially the definitive Fogerty / CCR greatest hits survey, covering everything from the delta-blues stomp of "Born on the Bayou" to the arena-rock inevitability of "Rockin' All Over the World." "Centerfield," "The Old Man Down the Road," and "Blue Moon Nights" represent the solo years without apology.

This is the Limited Edition version, individually numbered (this copy No. 02118), which added a second CD to the standard single-disc release and positioned itself explicitly as the ultimate Fogerty collection. The bonus track "Deja Vu (All Over Again)" on the DVD was not included on standard editions. For collectors of American rock, or anyone who wants the full John Fogerty / CCR catalogue performed live, this is the set.

Interesting Facts

  • Fogerty's legal battle over the CCR recordings lasted from the early 1970s until the mid-1990s, when he finally regained the ability to perform the songs live; for a period he was actually sued for allegedly plagiarizing his own earlier work.
  • "Proud Mary," which closes this concert, was the first major CCR hit (1969) and has since become one of the most covered songs in American rock, with Tina Turner's version arguably more famous globally than the original.
  • The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, where this concert was filmed, is a 1931 Art Deco landmark — the marquee photographed for this set's cover shows Fogerty's name alongside the title The Long Road Home.
  • "Fortunate Son," performed here, was written in about 20 minutes by Fogerty in 1969 as a direct response to the Vietnam draft; it has been used in dozens of films and television programs and remains one of the most recognized protest songs in American music.
  • Fogerty played every guitar part on all CCR studio recordings himself, including bass and lead, which was highly unusual at the time and gives his live performances an almost self-contained quality.
  • The Fantasy label, which originally released CCR's records and was at the center of the royalties dispute, was eventually acquired by Concord Music Group — the same company that released this concert film.
