Overview
Hébert Leemans died at thirty, and almost nothing of his music has been recorded — which makes this release a small act of recovery. The Terra Nova Collective takes his Six Quatuors, Op. 3, scored for flute or oboe with bassoon, violin and cello, and plays them on period instruments, restoring the colors Leemans would have actually heard.
The music sits at the hinge between late Baroque and early Classical: galant phrasing, light textures, and a conversational give-and-take between the wind and string voices. The bassoon is no mere continuo filler here — it's a full partner, which is part of what makes the scoring unusual and rewarding.
Fourteen short movements across six quartets, none overstaying its welcome. A genuine discovery for collectors of the period and anyone who enjoys chamber music off the beaten path.
Interesting Facts
- Hébert Leemans (1741–1771) was a Flemish composer whose brief life left only a small surviving catalog, making complete recordings of his work rare.
- The Op. 3 quartets are explicitly scored "for flute or oboe, bassoon, violin and cello" — an unusual mixed wind-and-string combination for the period.
- The Terra Nova Collective specializes in lesser-known repertoire performed on historical instruments.
- The booklet's trilingual notes (English, French, Dutch) reflect the album's Belgian-Dutch origins.
- Etcetera Records, based in the Netherlands, has long championed neglected and rediscovered classical repertoire.
