Overview

Minsarah is the debut of the trio that took its name from this album — pianist Florian Weber, bassist Jeff Denson and drummer Ziv Ravitz, three voices that would go on to back saxophonist Lee Konitz for years afterward. Recorded for the German jazz label Enja in 2006, it captures the group at its first full statement.

The writing is shared rather than led. Denson, Ravitz and Weber each contribute originals, and the trio reaches outward too — a reading of Björk's "New World," Wayne Shorter's "E.S.P.," and a Paz Miranda piece reworked with Weber. The result leans toward the lyrical and the textural: piano that breathes, a bass that sings rather than just walks, and drumming that colors more than it drives.

Weber's instrument list alone — kalimba, loops, even a rum bottle alongside the piano — hints at how the trio thinks. This is a piano trio that treats the format as open territory. Eleven tracks, no filler, and a clear sense of three players listening hard to one another.

Interesting Facts

  • The trio named itself Minsarah after this album; the word later became their permanent group identity and the foundation of their long collaboration with Lee Konitz.
  • Florian Weber studied at the Cologne and Manhattan music schools and has worked across both the European and American jazz scenes.
  • The album mixes group originals with covers spanning Wayne Shorter's hard-bop classic "E.S.P." and Björk's "New World" from the Selmasongs soundtrack.
  • Enja Records, founded in Munich in 1971, is one of Europe's most respected independent jazz labels.
  • Weber credits unconventional sound sources — kalimba, tape loops, a struck rum bottle — as part of his approach to expanding the piano trio's palette.
