Overview

Three guitarists, three generations, one acoustic conversation. Ralph Towner, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Slava Grigoryan bring different instruments and backgrounds to the same table — Towner's classical and 12-string, Muthspiel's electric, Grigoryan's classical and baritone — and let the textures do the talking.

What makes Travel Guide work is restraint. No one crowds anyone. The interplay is conversational, lines passing between players, harmonies pooling and clearing. Towner, an ECM mainstay since the 1970s and co-founder of Oregon, anchors much of it with his unmistakable sense of space; Muthspiel and Grigoryan answer with warmth and color.

The pieces range from the gently propulsive "Father Time" to the title track and the closing "Museum of Light," with stops at "Duende," "Amarone Trio" and "Die blaue Stunde" along the way. It's chamber jazz in the truest sense — intimate, unhurried, beautifully recorded.

This is the sealed 2013 ECM edition, produced by Manfred Eicher with the label's signature clarity and depth.
