Overview

Kurtágonals is an outlier in the ECM New Series catalog — an album of electronic improvisation rather than notated chamber music. Three Hungarian musicians build long, evolving soundscapes from synthesizers, computers, bass and effects, somewhere between ambient drift and live electroacoustic experiment.

The presence of György Kurtág jr. — son of the celebrated composer — gives the project its name and part of its pull. Working alongside László Hortobágyi, a musician known for fusing electronics with non-Western traditions, and bassist Miklós Lengyelfi, he shapes pieces that range from meditative drone to dense, abstract texture.

Titles like "Kurtagamelan," "Dronezone," "Twin PeaX" and "Necroga" hint at the mix of humor, gamelan-tinged color and dark atmosphere. This is music that rewards immersion — slow shifts, layered electronics, the sense of a space being explored in real time.

This is the sealed 2009 ECM New Series edition, an ECM production carrying the label's care for sound and space into electronic territory.

Interesting Facts

  • György Kurtág jr. is the son of the renowned Hungarian composer György Kurtág, and works primarily in electronic and improvised music.
  • László Hortobágyi is known for blending electronics with Indian and other non-Western musical traditions through his "Gáyan Uttejak" projects.
  • Kurtágonals is one of the relatively few purely electronic albums issued in the predominantly acoustic ECM New Series.
  • The track "Twin PeaX" nods playfully toward David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" in its title.
  • The album was produced as an ECM Production and recorded with the label's characteristic attention to spatial depth.
  • The trio's instrumentation — synths, computers, bass and effects — places the music between ambient, drone and live electroacoustic improvisation.
