Overview

Lament is one of Giya Kancheli's most affecting orchestral works — a single, slow-moving "music of mourning" written in memory of the composer Luigi Nono and scored for violin, soprano and orchestra. On ECM's New Series, it gets the spacious, hushed treatment the label is known for.

Kancheli's music lives in extremes of quiet and sudden intensity. Long stretches of near-silence are broken by surges of orchestral weight, then settle again. Gidon Kremer's violin moves through it like a single human voice, answered by soprano Maacha Deubner and the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra under Jansug Kakhidze.

The Georgian composer wrote much of his most personal music in this register — spare, spiritual, and unafraid of stillness. Lament sits alongside Mourned by the Wind and Abii ne viderem as a key statement of his late style.

Produced by Manfred Eicher, the recording has the depth and clarity that make ECM's New Series essential for lovers of contemporary classical music. For admirers of Pärt, Górecki and Silvestrov, this is unmissable.
