Overview
Filmed in July 1993 at the Peer Blues Festival in Belgium, this captures the Jeff Healey Band mid-tour behind their Feel This album — and it catches them doing something different. The band usually played as a trio, but here they expand, adding a keyboard player and two backing vocalists, which gives the songs noticeably more depth and range.
Healey himself was one of the most distinctive guitarists in blues, playing the instrument flat across his lap rather than upright — a self-taught technique born of necessity that became his signature sound. On stage he was an electric performer, and this set runs from his own material to a blazing take on The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" and a tender reading of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
The package pairs the full 82-minute concert film with a CD of the same performance, so you can watch it or take the audio with you. For blues and guitar fans, it's the band at the height of their live powers.
Interesting Facts
- Jeff Healey was blind from the age of one, having lost his sight to retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer.
- He developed a unique playing style, laying the guitar flat on his lap and fretting it from above — a technique almost no other player has matched.
- The Jeff Healey Band reached a wide audience after appearing in the 1989 film Road House alongside Patrick Swayze.
- This concert dates from the band's tour for Feel This, their third studio album, released in 1992.
- For these shows the usual power trio was augmented by keyboards and two backing vocalists, widening the band's live sound.
- Jeff Healey died in 2008 at the age of 41; releases like this preserve his reputation as a formidable live performer.
