Overview

Seong-Jin Cho won the International Chopin Competition in 2015 and became one of the most closely watched young pianists in the world, but Mozart has always been close to his heart — he describes the music as having everything, layer upon layer. This Deutsche Grammophon album lets him make that case across a concerto and two solo sonatas.

The centrepiece is the Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K 466 — one of only two Mozart concertos in a minor key, and the most dramatic of them all. Its storm-tossed outer movements and serene central Romance made it a favourite of Beethoven, who wrote his own cadenzas for it. Cho is partnered here by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, sensitive collaborators who match the work's light and shade.

The two solo sonatas provide contrast in the major key: the early, sunny Sonata No. 3 in B-flat, K 281, and the more technically demanding No. 12 in F, K 332. Together they show Cho's Mozart from two angles — as a concerto soloist in dialogue with an orchestra, and alone at the keyboard.

A fine choice for piano enthusiasts, Mozart lovers, and anyone following the career of one of today's leading young pianists.
