Overview

Plácido Domingo turns his voice to the sacred repertoire on this 2002 Deutsche Grammophon album. Sixteen songs of devotion and reflection, from concert-hall favourites to lesser-heard gems, sung by one of the greatest tenors of the age.

The programme is wide-ranging. Three different settings of the Ave Maria — Mascagni, the Bach/Gounod, and a setting by Domingo's own son, Plácido Domingo Jr. — sit alongside Franck's Panis angelicus, Schubert's Mille cherubini in coro, and Handel's beloved Ombra mai fù. There's even Rodgers' "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" from The Sound of Music, recast as a moment of uplift.

Domingo is joined by the Norwegian soprano Sissel on two tracks, and backed by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Giuseppe Verdi of Milan under Marcello Viotti. The arrangements, by Robert Sadin and Steven Mercurio, frame the voice with warmth rather than weight. A recording that works equally for quiet listening and the Christmas season.
