Overview
Ariel Ramírez's Misa Criolla is one of the most beloved sacred works to come out of Latin America — a setting of the Mass that trades European liturgical style for the rhythms and instruments of Argentine folk music. Each movement rides a different traditional form, from the chacarera of the Credo to the pampean lament of the Agnus Dei.
This recording puts tenor José Carreras at its center. One of the great voices of his generation, he brings operatic warmth and a real sense of devotion to music rooted in the village and the open plain. The pairing of his voice with native instruments — charango, quena, bombo — is the whole appeal.
Alongside the Mass comes Navidad Nuestra, Ramírez's Christmas cantata: six scenes telling the Nativity story through Argentine folk dances, from the chamamé of "La Anunciación" to the journey of "La Peregrinación," familiar far beyond the concert hall.
This is the sealed Decca edition — the newly recorded digital version made in 1987 in a Spanish sanctuary, presented with the label's clarity. A warm, accessible entry point into Latin American sacred music.
Interesting Facts
- Ariel Ramírez composed the Misa Criolla in the early 1960s, among the first Masses set to a vernacular text after the Second Vatican Council permitted local languages.
- Each movement of the Mass is built on a distinct Argentine or Andean folk form — chacarera, carnaval cochabambino, estilo pampeano and more.
- The companion work Navidad Nuestra recounts the Nativity through six Argentine folk-dance settings.
- This newly recorded digital version was made in July 1987 in the Santuario de la Bien Aparecida in Cantabria, Spain.
- José Carreras recorded this shortly before the illness that interrupted his career, making it a notable document of his voice at the time.
- The score uses traditional Andean and Argentine instruments such as the charango, quena and bombo legüero.
