Overview

A piece of British blues history that has been pulled straight out of the BBC vaults — and then signed by the man who built the band. John Mayall's autograph sits proudly across his own portrait on the front cover, the kind of detail that turns a great reissue into a real collector's piece.

The music inside is the story of a revolving door of legends. Eric Clapton on those 1965 Saturday Club sessions, raw and hungry. John McVie before Fleetwood Mac. Peter Green stepping in by January 1967. And then a coda — two tracks from The Old Grey Whistle Test in October 1975, with a seven-piece line-up and Don "Sugarcane" Harris on violin.

Here is the thing about BBC sessions from this era: many tapes were simply wiped and re-used because, in the BBC's words at the time, it was only pop music. What survived is precious. You get tight, sharp, three-minute versions of "Crawling Up A Hill", "I'm Your Witchdoctor", "Bye Bye Bird" and "Key To Love" — the last with a brief, beautiful Clapton solo that surfaced a month later on the legendary Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton album.

Mayall passed away in 2024. Hand-signed copies are no longer being produced. This one already exists.

John Mayall is widely called the "Godfather of British Blues" — his Bluesbreakers acted as a finishing school for an astonishing list of musicians, including Eric Clapton (who left to form Cream), Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (who together founded Fleetwood Mac), and Mick Taylor (who went on to join The Rolling Stones). The "Crawling Up A Hill" session from 26th April 1965 is one of the earliest surviving Bluesbreakers BBC recordings, and "I'm Your Witchdoctor" was actually released as a single that same year. The song "Riding On The L&N" was originally written in 1946 by jazz vibraphonist Lionel Hampton and pianist Dan Burley. John Mayall was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to music, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, the same year he passed away at age 90.
