Description:

The Yugoslavian-born composer, of ethnic Hungarian background, studied in Darmstadt, Germany and in Budapest. He settled in the town of Bajot, near Budapest, and gained Hungarian citizenship in 1993. As headmaster of a music school, he has composed a considerable amount of music for young audiences and young players.

Pinocchio is a three-act ballet on the famous Italian fantasy tale. The instant suite comprises the first three sections of the ballet, which is written in an expansive, post-Romantic tonal idiom. The opening movement of the suite is the ballet's prelude, a warm piece with a broad and yearning theme. The second section shows a cricket watching Gepetto carving the half-finished puppet, despite being disturbed by the cat and the dog. It has a lyrical introduction before taking a tone of a gentle grotesquerie. There is a liberal use of "wooden" effects from the orchestra, in the manner of Bartok's ballet "The Wooden Prince." As the wood-carver finishes his creation, the orchestra begins an exultant, boyish march, which is not completed. Gepetto puts down his tools and prays that he could have a real boy. The third movement is where the fairy appears and brings the wooden puppet to life. The opening his hushed, gentle, and mysterious, which soon yields to a rougher 5/4 section depicting Pinocchio's mischief-making. He is interrupted by Gepetto, who embraces his new "son." Pinocchio returns to his mischief. The movement alternates between Gepetto's feelings and Pinocchio's curiosity and rascality. Perhaps justified by the stage action, the music seems to build to an inevitable conclusion more than once, only to back off and change point of view. In the concert suite, this extends the final movement (which at nearly ten minutes is longer than the rest of the 17-minute suite) a bit more than the material can bear absent the stage action. Ultimately, despite many good ideas, the music seems to lack a distinctive personal composer's "voice."
