Overview
This six-disc Warner Classics box gathers the great concerto recordings of David Oistrakh, the Soviet violinist whose playing many still regard as the violinistic ideal. As The Strad put it, he combined "fingers of steel with a heart of gold" — tonal richness, complete technical poise, and an unshowy musical honesty that has never dated.
The repertoire is the core of the violin concerto literature: Beethoven and Brahms (with the Double Concerto alongside Rostropovich), Mozart's complete concertos, Sibelius, Bruch, Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, and the modern peaks of Prokofiev and Shostakovich. Conductors include Cluytens, Szell, Matačić, Martinon, and Galliera.
Newly remastered in high resolution for hybrid SACD, this is a definitive document of one of the 20th century's greatest violinists.
