Csillagok, Csillagok is the third volume in the Dancs Market Records Erdélyi népdalok (Transylvanian Folk Songs) series, presenting 13 tracks from the archive of Marosvásárhelyi Rádió — the Hungarian-language radio station of Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureș) in Transylvania — performed by the celebrated folk duo Tóth Erzsébet and Széllyes Sándor.
Tóth Erzsébet and Széllyes Sándor were one of the most beloved Hungarian folk duos from Transylvania, associated for decades with the Székely Népi Együttes and with Hungarian folk culture in Romania. Their voices and stage presence — documented extensively in the booklet's biographical note by Jászberényi Emese — carried Transylvanian folk song to audiences across Romania, Hungary, and the Hungarian diaspora worldwide, including performances in America, Japan, Beijing, Moscow, Stockholm, and Vienna.
The 13 tracks span a wide range of Transylvanian regional styles: Gyergyói, Nyárádmenti, Özdi, Ürmösi, and Válaszúti folk songs appear alongside medleys from specific village traditions. Track 13, a medley running 11:43, is the album's centrepiece — a sustained sequence of songs from Tóth and Széllyes's most beloved stage repertoire. The recordings come from the Marosvásárhelyi Rádió's gold tape archive, giving them historical as well as musical value.
Interesting Facts
- Széllyes Sándor grew up in Mikháza and studied at the Bolyai Líceum in Cluj (Kolozsvár); after graduating he became a stage performer and folk singer, eventually joining the Székely Népi Együttes where he and Tóth Erzsébet became inseparable artistic partners.
- The duo toured internationally more than ten times to America alone, as well as performing in Japan, Beijing, Moscow, Stockholm, and Vienna — an extraordinary reach for a regional folk ensemble from communist-era Romania.
