Overview
Van Damme versus the wasteland. Cyborg drops the martial-arts star into a plague-ravaged, post-apocalyptic 21st-century America, where civilisation has collapsed into anarchy and disease. He plays Gibson Rickenbauer, a "slinger" — a roaming sword-fighter — who becomes the last hope for a cure that could pull humanity back from the brink.
The plot is lean and brutal: Pearl Prophet, a part-machine woman, carries the knowledge needed to synthesise a vaccine, but a band of cannibal pirates seizes her, intent on holding the cure hostage and seizing what's left of the world. Rickenbauer has to cut through them to save her — and with her, the future of civilisation.
This is prime late-eighties Cannon-era action: directed by Albert Pyun, produced by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, scored by Kevin Bassinson. It's an early Van Damme star vehicle and a cult favourite among action collectors. This Hungarian Budapest Film edition runs about 86 minutes, with both Hungarian and English audio and Hungarian subtitles — a solid Region 2 disc for the Akció Klasszikusok line.
Interesting Facts
- Cyborg was a Cannon Films production from Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, the duo behind much of 1980s action cinema.
- Van Damme's character is named Gibson Rickenbauer — both surnames nodding to the famous guitar brands, a quiet in-joke threaded through the film's character names.
- Director Albert Pyun shot the film on the leftover sets and costumes of two cancelled Cannon projects, including a planned Spider-Man film.
- The cast includes Deborah Richter, Vincent Klyn as the villain Fender, and Dayle Haddon as Pearl Prophet.
- It was one of the films that cemented Van Damme as a leading action draw early in his career.
- This edition carries a 2006 Budapest Film cover design over the 1988 Golan-Globus copyright.
