Overview

This is the film of Pink Floyd – The Wall, Alan Parker's 1982 adaptation of the 1979 concept album, in the Limited Edition DVD that ships with a reproduction of the original film poster. Roger Waters wrote it, Bob Geldof stars as Pink, and Gerald Scarfe's animation stitches the whole thing together — the marching hammers, the schoolteacher, the flowers. It's less a concert film than a fever dream built around the music.

The story follows a burnt-out rock star walling himself off from the world, brick by brick, as childhood loss, an overbearing mother, and the music industry close in. Almost wordless in the conventional sense, it lets the songs carry the narrative: "Another Brick in the Wall," "Comfortably Numb," "Hey You," "Mother," "Goodbye Blue Sky." Scarfe's animated sequences remain some of the most striking ever paired with rock music.

For a Floyd collector, the appeal here is the package — the film itself plus the poster in a limited run, presented by Columbia Music Video. A strong shelf piece for anyone who loves the album and wants its visual companion.

Interesting Facts

  • The film was directed by Alan Parker (Midnight Express, Fame) and adapts Pink Floyd's 1979 album of the same name.
  • Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof plays the lead role of "Pink," despite reportedly disliking Pink Floyd's music at the time.
  • Cartoonist Gerald Scarfe created the film's distinctive animated sequences, extending the visual language he'd developed for the band's stage shows.
  • Roger Waters wrote the screenplay, drawing on autobiographical themes including the wartime death of his own father.
  • The film premiered at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and has since become a midnight-movie and home-video staple.
