A signed copy of the night the classic Uriah Heep lineup came back together in London — current band plus Ken Hensley and John Lawton, both back on stage at the same time, with a Roger Dean painting on the cover for good measure.

Uriah Heep are one of those bands the British rock press underestimated in the early 70s and the rest of the world quietly went on loving for the next fifty years. Built on the Hammond-organ-and-howling-vocals interplay of Ken Hensley and David Byron, with Mick Box's guitar holding the middle, they came out of the same 1969–1970 Vertigo Records explosion that gave the world Black Sabbath. Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards, The Magician's Birthday — three albums in eighteen months that landed Heep in stadiums across Europe, the USA, Japan and a country at the time called the USSR.

The Magician's Birthday Party is the document of one specific London night where the present-day Heep brought back Hensley (keys/vocals, the man who wrote most of the catalogue) and John Lawton (the vocalist of the Firefly and Innocent Victim era) for a one-off reunion. They run through Stealin', July Morning, Easy Livin', The Magician's Birthday, Sympathy — basically the songs people came to hear. Thijs Van Leer of Focus walks on at one point with a flute. The signature on the cover turns this from a fan-convention DVD into the kind of object a serious Heep collector keeps in a sleeve.

Interesting Facts

The cover art is original Roger Dean work — the same artist responsible for the Yes catalogue (Fragile, Close to the Edge, Yessongs) and the floating-islands visual language of seventies progressive rock. Dean has been associated with Uriah Heep going back to the 1972 Demons and Wizards sleeve, one of the most recognizable rock album covers of its era.

The concert reunites two voices from very different Heep eras: Ken Hensley (in the band 1970–1980, principal songwriter behind Lady in Black, July Morning, Easy Livin', The Wizard, Stealin') and John Lawton (vocalist 1976–1979, the Firefly, Innocent Victim and Fallen Angel albums). Behind them, Mick Box — Heep's last continuous founding member — anchors the present-day touring lineup.

Special guest Thijs Van Leer is the flautist, vocalist and keyboardist of Dutch prog band Focus, the band famous for Hocus Pocus and Sylvia in the early 70s.

Uriah Heep's July Morning has a particular cult status in Bulgaria, where it became an unofficial anthem of the post-communist generation and is still played at sunrise on the Black Sea coast every 1st of July.

Ken Hensley passed away in November 2020 and John Lawton in June 2021 — making this 2002 reunion footage one of the last filmed documents of the two of them together with the active Heep lineup.
