Overview
Two of Mozart's most technically demanding piano concertos, performed with the kind of transparency and lightness that the works actually ask for.
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet has been building his Mozart concerto cycle for Chandos over several volumes, and this second installment pairs KV 449 in E flat major with KV 459 in F major - both composed in 1784, during Mozart's peak years as Vienna's most sought-after pianist-composer. Between them sit two of the early Divertimenti for strings, KV 136 and KV 138 from 1772, giving the disc a pleasing arc from youthful brilliance to mature mastery.
Bavouzet's touch is precise without being clinical. Gábor Takács-Nagy draws clean, responsive playing from the Manchester Camerata, and the Chandos 24-bit recording picks up every shade of texture. At 69 minutes, the disc is well-filled and well-balanced.
Interesting Facts
