Overview
C.P.E. Bach's two oboe concertos sit in an interesting stylistic middle ground — not quite the strict Baroque counterpoint of his father, not yet fully into the Classical clarity that would follow, but something genuinely his own: emotionally direct, occasionally unpredictable, with slow movements (the Largo e mesto in particular) that carry real expressive weight. József Kiss brings a warm, unforced tone to both concertos and to the unaccompanied Sonata in A minor, which strips away the orchestra entirely and puts the oboe's expressive range fully on display. The disc closes with Alessandro Marcello's D minor Oboe Concerto — the same work Bach himself transcribed for harpsichord, and arguably the single most famous piece ever written for the instrument, thanks to its aching, Baroque-standard slow movement. Recorded at Budapest's Reformed Church with the Ferenc Erkel Chamber Orchestra, this is a well-programmed survey spanning solo, chamber, and concerto oboe writing across two generations of composers.
