Overview
Tom Cruise at his rawest. Born on the Fourth of July is Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning account of Ron Kovic — the eager small-town volunteer who marched off to Vietnam a true believer and came home paralysed from the chest down, his patriotism shattered into something harder and more honest.
The film follows Kovic from his flag-waving youth through the war that broke his body, into the bitter, disillusioned veteran's life that followed, and finally toward a new kind of courage: speaking out. It's a true story about lost innocence and found conviction, and Cruise carries it with a performance that stunned audiences who only knew him as a matinee idol.
Stone shot it with cinematographer Robert Richardson and scored it with John Williams; the supporting cast runs deep, from Kyra Sedgwick to Willem Dafoe. This Hungarian Universal / Select Video edition runs about 139 minutes in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, with Hungarian and English audio, generous subtitle options, and an Oliver Stone commentary track among the extras.

- John Williams composed the haunting score, with a memorable trumpet theme.
