Overview

This is Herbert Blomstedt's complete Beethoven symphony cycle with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig — one of the orchestras most deeply tied to this music, recorded in their own hall between 2014 and 2017. Blomstedt was in his late eighties when he made it, and the playing has the unhurried authority of a conductor who has lived inside these scores for decades.

All nine symphonies across five discs, including the "Eroica," the "Pastoral," and the "Choral" Ninth with a strong vocal quartet and the combined Gewandhaus and MDR choirs. The sound is clear and warm, the readings classical in proportion rather than flashy.
