Overview
On December 10, 2007, Led Zeppelin walked onto the stage of London's O2 Arena for the first time in 27 years and played one of the most anticipated concerts in rock history. Celebration Day is the document of that night — the full concert, filmed by director Dick Carruthers and released in 2012 across DVD and two CDs, capturing Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham (son of the late John Bonham, on drums) performing 16 songs across two hours to a sold-out arena of 20,000 people.
The set list is a near-perfect distillation of the Led Zeppelin catalogue: "Good Times Bad Times" opens, "Stairway to Heaven" anchors the second half, and "Kashmir," "Whole Lotta Love," and "Rock and Roll" close it out with the weight of classic rock mythology. But what makes Celebration Day more than a nostalgia exercise is how good the band actually sounds. Page's guitar, Plant's voice, Jones's bass and keys, and Bonham's drumming are all in seriously impressive form — this is not a reunion coasting on reputation.
The concert was organized as a tribute to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, who had died in 2006. The band rehearsed for weeks and reportedly chose to record it properly only after seeing how well the night had gone. The result is a concert film that holds up against anything in the rock documentary canon.
The two CDs divide the concert evenly across 8 tracks each, giving audio-only listeners the full show in Linear PCM fidelity alongside the DTS and Dolby Digital options on DVD.
Interesting Facts
- The O2 concert was triggered by a petition: over one million fans entered a ballot for the 20,000 available tickets, making it one of the most oversubscribed concerts ever staged in the UK.
- Jason Bonham, who was 41 at the time of the concert, first sat in with Led Zeppelin at age 17 — at Jimmy Page's wedding in 1986 — and played with them at their Atlantic Records 40th anniversary show in 1988.
- "Stairway to Heaven" had not been performed by the band since their 1980 European tour, making its return at the O2 one of the most charged moments of the evening.
- Dick Carruthers, who directed the film, had previously directed concert films and videos for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and other rock acts; Celebration Day is his highest-profile project and widely regarded as among the finest rock concert films ever made.
- The concert was held in memory of Ahmet Ertegun, who signed Led Zeppelin to Atlantic in 1968 and remained a close friend of the band throughout their career.
- The box set was released simultaneously worldwide on October 19, 2012, and entered album charts in multiple countries, an unusual achievement for a live release from a band that had not recorded new material in over three decades.
