Founding member of Genesis Anthony Philips re-issues his 4th solo album Sides as a 4 disc deluxe box set.
Sides is the fourth studio album by English musician and composer Anthony Phillips. It was released in April 1979 by Arista Records in the United Kingdom and in June 1979 on Passport Records in the United States. After completing Private Parts & Pieces (1978), an album of home recordings that Phillips had recorded years before but remained unreleased, Phillips returned to making a commercial record. The UK release saw the first 5,000 copies of Sides packaged with a Collectors Album edition of Private Parts & Pieces.
Originally released back in 1979, this brand new 2016 version contains 3 CDs & 1 DVD.
Disc 1 is a brand new 2016 stereo mix which does have some very subtle nuances, pans & splits compared to the original stereo remaster & the original vinyl.
Disc 2 is purely magical & is almost worth the purchase of this box set on its own. Featuring demos, mixes & single edits that are available for the 1st time on CD.
Disc 3 is the original stereo remaster & is included for completests.
Disc 4 is a DVD where you have the choice of Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 (which is just mind boggling great) or a LPCM stereo mix. Combined with the demo disc is certainly worth the purchase.
The audio CDs are great, the remasters are lovingly done but its the 5.1 mix is where this box set excels. I ran the DTS version & by Jove it’s astonishing. Lights off, the odd candle flickering & the proginess of this album just transcends all time & space.
This collection is housed in a very nice clamshell box along with a poster but a gorgeous color booklet which contains a great essay by the legend Jonathon Dann & superb liner notes to accompany this set.
The ex-Genesis guitarists’ 1979 long-player was produced by Rupert Hine and saw him supported by an able cast of musicians that included Mike Giles & Mel Collins (King Crimson), John G. Perry (Caravan, Quantum Jump) and John Hackett (a member of his brother Steve’s band).
This deluxe edition features a new stereo mix of the album, a newly re-mastered version of the original stereo mix and a CD of demos, out-takes and extras.
Even better, this comes with a new 5.1 Surround Sound Mix of the record on DVD (region-free, NTSC) and an illustrated booklet with a new essay by Jon Dann featuring interviews with Anthony Phillips and Rupert Hine.
Track 1-6 is the B side of the single "Um & Aargh", released April 1979. The original 7" version of "Um & Aargh" appears as Track 2-7.
Presented in a clamshell box with 4 mini-LP sleeves, 20 pages booklet and foldout poster.

The record saw Anthony supported by an able cast of musicians that included Mike Giles & Mel Collins (King Crimson), John G. Perry (Caravan, Quantum Jump) and John Hackett (a member of his brother Steve's band). Featuring such wonderful compositions as Um & Aargh, Sisters of Remindum, Bleak House, Lucy Will and Nightmare, Sides is a classic album of the late 70s Progressive era. This deluxe edition features a new stereo mix of the album, a newly re-mastered version of the original album stereo mix and a CD of demos, out-takes and extras. The set also includes a DVD (NTSC Region Free) of a new 5.1 Surround Sound Mix of the record and a lavishly illustrated booklet with a new essay by Jon Dann featuring interviews with Anthony Phillips and Rupert Hine (the album's producer). Sides is the latest release in Esoteric Recordings' on-going series of official Anthony Phillips reissues.
