Overview

This eleven-disc Sony Classical box gathers the cellist Anner Bylsma's landmark recordings of the great cello repertoire — most famously both of his complete cycles of Bach's Six Suites for solo cello, the 1979 and the 1992 recordings, side by side. For anyone who cares about period-instrument cello playing, that pairing alone is the reason to own this.

Beyond the Bach Suites, the set ranges wide: Bach sonatas with harpsichord and viola da gamba, the violin partitas adapted for cello piccolo, Vivaldi and Boccherini sonatas, Corelli's "La Follia," and a disc on the 17th-century cello. The supporting cast is a roll-call of period-performance royalty — Brüggen, Leonhardt, van Asperen.

A definitive document of one of the most influential cellists of the historically-informed movement.

Interesting Facts

  • He frequently played a Baroque cello and a violoncello piccolo, the smaller five-string instrument used for some of the music here.
  • Collaborators include Frans Brüggen, Gustav Leonhardt, and Bob van Asperen, leading figures of the early-music world.
