Overview

Struggle for Life (Essential) is a live document of After Crying, the Hungarian chamber-rock band, drawn mainly from 1999 concerts and topped off with a special 1997 recording. It captures on stage what makes the band singular: progressive rock fused with classical and improvised passages, brass and cello pushing against the rock core.

The set ranges from composed pieces — "Viaduct," "Pilgrims' March," "Burlesque" — to a long "Conclusion" sequence that opens up into duets and solos for cello, guitar, piano, drums, and trumpet. The headline draw is the closer: a near-eleven-minute take on King Crimson's "Starless," sung and played by Crimson legend John Wetton himself, recorded in Budapest in 1997.

For prog fans, that Wetton collaboration alone makes this a notable live release.
