Overview

Waltz of the Toreadors (also known as The Amorous General) is a charming 1962 film directed by John Guillermin, featuring the talented Peter Sellers and Dany Robin. Adapted from the play by Jean Anouilh, the film shifts the setting from France to England. It was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best British Screenplay in 1963.

The film had its world premiere on April 12, 1962, at the Odeon Leicester Square in London's West End.

The story marks the end of a distinguished military career for General Leo Fitzjohn (Peter Sellers) as he retires to his manor in Sussex, intending to write his memoirs. However, his personal life is in turmoil. A notorious womanizer, Leo has managed to alienate his wife Emily, who has become a shrewish and hypochondriac figure, harboring bitterness while still loving him.

Leo has two plain-looking daughters he struggles to connect with, and an attractive French mistress named Ghislaine (Dany Robin) with whom he has maintained a platonic relationship for seventeen years. When Ghislaine returns, determined to rekindle their romance and eliminate Emily from the equation, Leo finds himself at a crossroads, unsure of how to navigate his complicated love life.

Waltz of the Toreadors delivers a mix of comedy and romance, showcasing Peter Sellers' comedic genius and the film's clever dialogue and engaging plot.
