Overview

Set in 1969, Taking Woodstock is a film directed by Ang Lee, based on the true story of Elliot Tiber (played by Demetri Martin), an aspiring interior designer from Greenwich Village. Elliot's parents, Jake (Henry Goodman) and Sonia (Imelda Staunton), run the small, dilapidated El Monaco Resort in White Lake, located in Bethel, New York.

A hippie theater troupe, The Earthlight Players, rents the barn at the resort but struggles to pay any rent. Due to financial difficulties, the motel faces closure; however, Elliot pleads with the local bank to refrain from foreclosing on their mortgage, while Sonia shares her challenges as a Russian refugee.

In a bid to save the resort, Elliot plans to host a small music festival and acquires a permit from the town's chamber of commerce for just $1, in which he also holds the position of president. When he learns that the organizers of the Woodstock Festival are facing opposition at their original location, he offers his permit and the motel accommodations to organizer Michael Lang (Jonathan Groff).

Neighbor Max Yasgur (Eugene Levy) agrees to rent out his nearby farmland for the festival; initially, they settle on a fee of $5,000, but after realizing the scale of the event, Yasgur demands $75,000, which the organizers eventually accept. Elliot negotiates the fee for the motel more smoothly, and his mother's initial objections vanish when she sees the cash paid in advance.
