Philip Kindred Dick (Chicago, 1928. december 16. – Santa Ana, 1982. március 2.) amerikai sci-fi író, aki a műfajt alapjaiban változtatta meg. Nem tudományos tényekre építette írásainak tematikus alapját, hanem metafizikai alternatívákra. Annak ellenére, hogy már életében olyan személyiségek tisztelték, mint Stanisław Lem, művei nem élveztek nagy publicitást. Egészen haláláig, ami után több regényéből készített sikeres filmet mutattak be, s ez végül maga után vonta megérdemelt elismerését. Műveit legalább 25 nyelvre fordították le.

Philip Kindred Dick (December 16, 1928 – March 2, 1982) was an American writer known for his work in science fiction. His work explored philosophical, social, and political themes, with stories dominated by monopolistic corporations, alternative universes, authoritarian governments, and altered states of consciousness. His writing also reflected his interest in metaphysics and theology, and often drew upon his life experiences, addressing the nature of reality, identity, drug abuse, schizophrenia, and transcendental experiences. Dick produced 44 published novels and approximately 121 short stories, most of which appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Dick moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with his family at a young age. He began publishing science fiction stories in 1951, at the age of 22. His stories initially found little commercial success, but his 1962 alternative history novel The Man in the High Castle earned Dick early acclaim, including a Hugo Award for Best Novel. He followed with science fiction novels such as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) and Ubik (1969). His 1974 novel Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. Following a series of paranormal experiences in February 1974, Dick's work engaged more explicitly with issues of theology, philosophy, and the nature of reality, as in such novels as A Scanner Darkly (1977) and VALIS (1981). A collection of his nonfiction writing on these themes was published posthumously as The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick (2011). He died in 1982 in Santa Ana, California, at the age of 53, due to complications from a stroke.

A Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskolán tanult, de másfél év után eltanácsolták. A már diákként elkezdett szinkronizálás ekkor fő tevékenységéve vált. Leginkább a Jóbarátok c. tv-sorozat dr. Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), Nate Fisher (Peter Krause) figurái a legnépszerűbbek, emellett Wesley Snipes (Penge 1, 2, Penge: Szentháromság), Denzel Washington és Vin Diesel is az ő hangján szólal meg magyarul a legtöbbször. A filmes munka mellett 2000 nyarától az ESTFM 98.6, majd annak megszűnése után a Klubrádióban műsort vezetett, később a közszolgálati televízióban vett részt kulturális műsorok készítésében. Ezek közül a Kultúrház volt a leginkább hozzá kötődő. 2011 nyarán eltávolították a képernyőről.

A magyar szinkront szívügyének tekinti, a minőség megszállottja. 2015 tavaszán hasonló felfogású kollégáival Szinkron alapszervezetet alakított a Színházi Dolgozók Szakszervezetén belül. Létrehozott egy miniügynökséget, melyben magas színvonalú reklámok készítését vállalja kiváló kollégáival. Nagyon sok reklámban hallhatjuk a hangját, például már 2000 előtt óta a Magyar Telekom narrátora. Különböző televíziós és rádiócsatornák is előszeretettel használják állomáshangnak, jelenleg éppen a Mozi+ és a Sláger Fm hangja. Ő az egyik legfoglalkoztatottabb filmelőzetes hang. Igényes beszédének, „kormos” hangjának köszönhetően számos hangoskönyvet is készített.

Elbeszéléseiben bizarrnál bizarabb ötleteket, gondolatokat formál krimiszerűen feszült történetekké, a cselekmény szálait gyakran több valóságsíkra fűzi, s az egymással párhuzamos univerzumok képének üzenete egyértelmű, elgondolkodtató és nem kevésbé lehangoló: az ember nem más, mint lejárt, túlhaladott, elavult és kiselejteznivaló modell. Írásai alapján számos nagysikerű film készült, így például a Szárnyas fejvadász, a Különvélemény vagy a Kamera által homályosan.

English Summary:

"Upon the Dull Earth" is a science fiction short story by American writer Philip K. Dick, first published in November 1954 in Beyond Fantasy Fiction.

By offering up the blood of a lamb, Silvia, the protagonist of Upon the Dull Earth, is able to summon creatures she identifies as angels. She thinks that the creatures are her ancestors, and she is sure that one day she will join them. At the same time, though, it is not clear whether the creatures are really good, as Silvia thinks, or wicked. Their behavior and their relation with Silvia scare the girl's relatives and Rick, her boyfriend. Rick thinks that Silvia's behavior is very dangerous, as "the white-winged giants ... can sear [her] to ash". During a quarrel with Rick, the girl accidentally cuts herself. Independently from her will, Silvia's blood summons the creatures. Unable to control their power, the angel-like giants burn Silvia's body and leave only "a brittle burned-out husk".
