Overview

Persuasion is a 2007 British television film adaptation of Jane Austen's 1817 novel of the same name. Directed by Adrian Shergold, the screenplay was written by Simon Burke. The film stars Sally Hawkins as the protagonist Anne Elliot and Rupert Penry-Jones as Frederick Wentworth.

Set eight years after Anne was persuaded to reject Wentworth's marriage proposal, the story follows Anne at the age of 27 as she encounters Wentworth again. He has become wealthy through his success in the Napoleonic Wars and is now looking for a wife—anyone but Anne, who he feels has wronged him by rejecting him all those years ago.

The Elliot family, struggling financially due to the extravagant spending of Sir Walter Elliot and his eldest daughter Elizabeth, faces the prospect of leasing their family estate, Kellynch Hall, to Admiral Croft, who has returned from the wars. Anne is distressed by the thought, especially since the admiral is married to Wentworth’s sister.

Years ago, Anne was engaged to Wentworth, but he was then a penniless commander without a ship, and their engagement was discouraged by her father and family friend Lady Russell, who persuaded her to break it off. Now, as Wentworth has risen in rank and fortune, Anne feels the weight of time and societal expectations, while Wentworth harbors unresolved feelings from their past.
