Although Finn complies, he is taken hostage as the convict attempts to escape to Mexico. However, their plan is thwarted when the police seize the convict’s small boat, leading to a tense confrontation.

The next day, Finn learns through the news that the convict is a mobster named Arthur Lustig, who had escaped from death row but has now been recaptured. This pivotal encounter sets Finn on a path of love, betrayal, and self-discovery as he navigates the complexities of adulthood.

L’intrigue transporte le récit de l’Angleterre victorienne à New York dans les années 1990. Le personnage principal, Pip, devient Finnegan "Finn" Bell, un orphelin élevé par sa sœur Maggie et son compagnon Joe sur la côte du Golfe. Un jour, alors qu’il joue seul sur la plage, Finn est confronté à un évadé de prison, Arthur Lustig, qui le force à lui fournir nourriture, médicaments et une pince pour enlever ses chaînes. Finn obéit, mais le fugitif est bientôt capturé. L’événement marque profondément l’enfant.

Leur amour renaît brièvement, mais Estella finit par se marier. Finn découvre que son mystérieux bienfaiteur est en réalité Arthur Lustig, reconnaissant pour l’aide que Finn lui avait apportée enfant. Peu après leurs retrouvailles, Lustig est tué.
