Dániel Berzsenyi lived and worked as a wealthy but solitary landowner in Somogy County, often referred to as the "Hermit of Nikla." He wrote his poems in secret for a long time; only his friend, pastor János Kis, discovered his talent and sent his verses to Ferenc Kazinczy. Although Kazinczy was enthusiastic about Berzsenyi's work, Ferenc Kölcsey's severe critique in 1817 deeply wounded the poet, leading to a creative crisis. Berzsenyi's poetry transferred the classical Greco-Roman poetic forms, especially the odes of Horace, into the Hungarian language with unparalleled power and musicality. The peaks of his lyricism are his quantitative elegies and odes, such as "A közelítő tél" (The Approaching Winter), Magányosság (Solitude), and Búcsúzás Kemenesaljától (Farewell to Kemenesalja), which express the spirit of the Enlightenment and anxiety over the nation's fate. In 1830, he was elected a regular member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, acknowledging his prominent place in literature.

Verseit sokáig titokban írta; csak barátja, Kis János lelkész fedezte fel tehetségét, aki elküldte verseit Kazinczy Ferencnek.
