This Blu-ray release features Richard Wagner's opera "Die Walküre" (The Valkyrie) from the Metropolitan Opera's 2011 production, which is the second part of the complete Ring cycle directed by Robert Lepage. Die Walküre is the second opera in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) tetralogy, continuing the epic story based on Germanic mythology. The opera's plot presents the tragic love story of Siegmund and Sieglinde, as well as the conflict between Wotan and his favorite daughter, Brünnhilde. The production's uniqueness comes from the revolutionary "machine," a stage structure consisting of 24 independently moving platforms that can transform into different scenes and is complemented by video projections. The performance is conducted by James Levine, the Met's legendary conductor. The outstanding performances by international opera stars—including Jonas Kaufmann, Bryn Terfel, and Deborah Voigt—and the breathtaking scene featuring eight Valkyries result in one of the most exciting modern interpretations of the opera.

Robert Lepage innovatív rendezése a "Gépezet" (The Machine) néven ismert hatalmas, számítógép-vezérelt szerkezet köré épül, amely a Ring-ciklus mind a négy operájának fő díszleteleme. Robert Lepage's innovative direction centers around an enormous computer-controlled structure known as "The Machine," which serves as the main set element for all four operas of the Ring cycle. This structure, consisting of 24 large, independently movable and rotatable platforms, allows the stage to continuously transform: during the Valkyries' riding scene, the performers "ride" on steeply tilted platforms; during the raging storm, it transforms into a forest; and at the end of the performance, it even displays Brünnhilde's sleeping figure suspended in the air. Although critics were divided on the effectiveness of the mechanism (it sometimes operated noisily and limited the singers' movement), these problems are not perceptible on the Blu-ray recording, and the visual effect is stunning.

This production features exceptional singers: Jonas Kaufmann as Siegmund impresses the audience with his gorgeous voice and acting; Bryn Terfel is remarkable as Wotan, capable of capturing the character's complexity from the angry god to the mourning father; Eva-Maria Westbroek creates an emotionally rich Sieglinde; Deborah Voigt shines in her first role as Brünnhilde; and Stephanie Blythe is powerful and commanding as Fricka. The production also pays special attention to the octet of Valkyries (Wotan's warrior daughters who carry fallen heroes to Valhalla), who create not only vocally but also visually stunning scenes when they arrive on stage on their "horses."

James Levine, who was the music director of the Metropolitan Opera for decades, had already limited his conducting activities due to health problems during this period, but Die Walküre was one of the few operas he kept in his repertoire. The performance exemplifies Levine's masterful interpretation of Wagner and his special relationship with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Under his direction, the orchestra performs excellently in both the grand, dramatic parts and the more delicate, lyrical sections. The Blu-ray release's 5.1 audio particularly well conveys the richness and depth of Wagner's score.
