Overview: Completing The Contest Between Harmony and Invention
This Arts Audio CD, released in 2007 as part of the Authentic Series, presents the rarely recorded second half of Antonio Vivaldi's monumental collection, Il Cimento Dell'Armonia E Dell'Inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention), Op. 8 (Concertos Nos. 7-12). While the first six concertos are famous (including The Four Seasons), the latter six are equally inventive and showcase Vivaldi's genius.
Featuring historically informed performances by Accademia Bizantina, conducted by Ottavio Dantone, this recording highlights the virtuosic contributions of violinist Stefano Montanari and, notably, oboist Paolo Grazzi on the oboe concerto (RV 454). These concertos offer a rich array of moods and technical challenges, making this CD a vital acquisition for collectors and enthusiasts looking to explore the full breadth of Vivaldi's influential Baroque publication.

Interesting Facts: Beyond The Seasons and the Oboe Inclusion
Vivaldi's Op. 8 collection was dedicated to Count Wenceslas of Morzin upon its publication in 1725. While Concertos 1–4 defined program music, Concertos 7–12 offer more traditional, yet still intensely dramatic, Baroque structures.
A key feature of this second half is the inclusion of the Concerto in D minor, RV 454 (Op. 8 No. 9), which is one of the concertos Vivaldi designated for the oboe instead of the violin in the original publication. This shift in instrumentation adds textural variety and demonstrates Vivaldi's mastery over wind instruments. Solo oboist Paolo Grazzi brings depth and color to this concerto. This recording, part of the acclaimed Authentic series, utilizes period instruments to achieve the crisp, dynamic sound characteristic of 18th-century Venetian music.
