A mű a dualizmus kori Magyarország válságát, összeomlását, valamint az újjászervezésére tett kísérletek eszmetörténeti hátterét vizsgálja, az előző kötetekben kidolgozott módszertani alapokon.

A szerző célja, hogy feltárja a korszak politikai ideológiai küzdelmeinek gondolati tartalmát, és megvilágítsa, miként alakultak át a politikai pozíciók és alternatívák a történelmi Magyarország szétesésének időszakában.
