A mű a politikai gondolkodástörténet egyik alapkérdését vizsgálja: milyen szerepet játszanak a gondolatrendszerek, azaz a paradigmák a politikai tagoltság és döntéshozatal kialakulásában és fennmaradásában.

A szerző a gondolkodástörténeti kutatások során szerzett tapasztalataira építve mutatja be a modernitás három meghatározó ideológiájának — liberalizmus, szocializmus, konzervativizmus — kétszáz éves fejlődéstörténetét. Arra keresi a választ, hogy ezek a paradigmák napjainkban is meghatározó tényezői-e a politikai gondolkodásnak, vagy új eszmerendszerek vették át helyüket.

A kötet nemcsak elméleti áttekintés, hanem módszertani megújulásra is törekszik: Schlett javaslatokat fogalmaz meg a politikatudomány nyelvhasználatának korrekciójára, és új megismerési kategóriák kidolgozását szorgalmazza, amelyek segítségével a tudomány elszakadhat a napi politikai diskurzus korlátaitól.
