The Kui language is classified as a Katuic language of the Mon-Khmer language family, closely related to Khmer, the national language of Cambodia.
Traditionally, the Kuy people did not have a written language. A local folk tale suggests that the elders originally inscribed their language on pig skin, but it was lost when dogs ate it.
There are several dialects of Kui, with two primary dialects identified in Cambodia that exhibit a relatively high degree of mutual intelligibility. Most Kuy people also speak Khmer, leading to a gradual loss of their native language in some areas.
