A könyv két nagy részből áll: az első a serdülőkori öngyilkos és önsértő magatartás nemzetközi és hazai irodalmát tekinti át, a második pedig a szerző és munkatársai saját kutatásait mutatja be. A vizsgálatok középpontjában a pszichológiai háttértényezők állnak – mint a depresszió, diszfunkcionális attitűdök, konfliktuskezelés, temperamentum, karaktervonások, impulzivitás, motiváció, valamint az öndestruktív magatartás érzelmi dinamikája.

A kutatás alapját a 2004–2006 között végzett Pannónia Serdülőpszichiátriai Felmérés adta, amely normál és klinikai populációkon egyaránt készült. A könyv szociálpszichiátriai szemléletben íródott, a biológiai és neurokémiai háttér helyett az emberi viselkedés pszichológiai és társadalmi összefüggéseire helyezi a hangsúlyt.
