Overview

Evening (Hungarian title: Este) is a poignant drama about the deep bonds between mothers and daughters and the enduring power of a long-lost love. As memories flood back, the aging Ann Lord (Vanessa Redgrave) shares a long-kept secret with her daughters (Natasha Richardson and Toni Collette). She recalls a pivotal weekend fifty years earlier when she was known as Ann Grant (Claire Danes)—a young woman from New York attending the wedding of her best friend, Lila Wittenborn (Mamie Gummer), as a bridesmaid. Directed by the world-renowned Hungarian cinematographer-turned-director Lajos Koltai, the film explores life's "what ifs" with emotional depth and visual grace.
